BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PROGRAM

Modern students are often impatient and excessively skeptical. It is as if everyone since birth has been trying to fool them about something and if they do not get some sort of instant gratification, they dismiss anything that was said. The attitude seems to be a constant search for short cuts and anyone not validating that point of perspective is seem as a liar or charlatan.

But few things in life can be attained via shortcuts and few things offer long term gratification without any effort.

At the training social during the recent force on force class I was approached by several students commenting on how smoothly Brent and I moved through the drills. I humbly thanked them on both our behalf for the compliment, and pointed out that both of us have been training martial disciplines since childhood. None of this happened overnight by sheer will and hope. It is that “time spent” – the “work done” where the magic begins.

There are all manner of new coined words and ideas that are merely the restating of age old concepts used to train fighters and killers since the Viking Age. When you execute your draw 500 times a day for 100 days, you are developing and reinforcing neural and muscular pathways to facilitate that movement, and developing muscle memory as well as the ability to perform that action without direct mental involvement.

Physical methods must be learned, practiced, and preserved in a physical medium. Think of the difference between me showing you a video of a draw and you watching it 500 times while sitting on your couch compared to me showing you how to draw and you physically memorizing it and executing it the right way 500 times.

Physical memorization of the correct execution leads to the ability to instantly perform that action with the need for direct thought. This is the mindlessness (or Mushin) that I have written about so much. It doesn’t happen automatically, it is the direct result of contextual training and repetition work.

But this is where I will tell you that not all training is good training. Nor are all techniques equally good. Unless a technique takes into consideration the realities of the street, the factors of surprise and adrenaline, and the state of unreadiness at the start of the fight, that technique or method should not be taken seriously. A technique or method that is wonderful on the sporting field, may have no value in combat and actually be detrimental to your success, not to mention your survival.

And developing muscle memory for a flawed method is just as bad as not having trained anything at all.

Think of the trainee working for an arm-bar on his back on a sidewalk (because it wins so many grappling competitions) as his adversary reaches for a knife and stabs him in the scrotum. Or the trainee that throws a head kick (because face punches are not allowed in his sport) and falls on that same sidewalk, just in time for a five man boot party. Or of course, the shooter that uses no tactics and has no consideration of his enemy’s incoming rounds because he never does when sport shooting.

If your objective is sports, don’t bother with me or what I write because its not going to help you. But if your focus is being a better fighter, I will tell you to validate and verify what you are training for yourself so that you program the correct and beneficial responses.

DISTANCE AND TIMING

The students at the recent Force On Force class will recall a vociferous student making an issue about the importance of controlling distance, and our response that distance was not something you could control in our study.

Anecdote Number 1:The call was of suspicious circumstances…screaming and glass breaking at a house. On arrival, everything was dark and no answer when we knocked on the door. I moved toward the back of the house and moved quietly as possible as I scanned and tasted the air. There was something here…I didn’t know what, but I could sense it. As I moved toward the garage, my back up continued to knock on the front door. I could hear them announcing “Police Department…open the door”. I soft checked the garage door, and it opened. Suspect at three feet. As much as it would have been great to be thirty feet away, there was no way I could increase my distance…but I could change my angle.

Anecdote Number 2: Someone was using the laundry at an apartment building…someone that didn’t live there. A bullshit call about well, bullshit. I was telling the dispatchers the name of the man I was talking with, as well as his date of birth. “10-1 – 3 Lincoln 7 – 10-2 Adam – 918“. The dispatcher was telling me in code that the man in front of me was wanted and armed and a dangerous dude…a wanted parolee at large.

I tried to be poker-faced, but he sensed something and made a reach for my holstered

weapon. Distance – four feet. I suppose some might suggest running away to increase distance, but guys like that never allow their asses to leave their seats. Life happens at whatever distance life chooses to happen and you, my dear student have no control over it. The bad guy? He went down hard with a broken leg.

Martial students have a misunderstanding of distance interval because they train at artificial distances. It shows up before the drill even begins, because the combatants in a sport agree to a starting distance, then their focus becomes one of moving in and out of distance to gain an advantage. So managing and overcoming distance is always a factor in combat sports, but distance is already decided in a fight where you do not have the initiative.

This is an important distinction. You either have the initiative or you do not. Its not a sparring bout, it is a street fight where one party decides to ambush the other. Nothing consensual about it. There is no opportunity to change the distance. If you have that opportunity, you also have the initiative. In fact, attempts to increase distance of ten play directly into the adversary’s line of attack. No, the solution in events where you lack the initiative is in moving to the flank…to the angles.

The two concepts are – Distance and Timing. In Karate they are called Maai, and Hyoshi. But in a real street fight and not a competitive event, the distance is determined by the adversary as well as your perception of him. If you realize the attack is coming at thirty feet, you may have options not available to you if you realized the attack was coming at three feet. The point is simple – in the real world, the adversary often determines the distance, and that is only affected by your perception of the attacker and his plans.

Timing (and the physical manifestation of it – angular movement) is something you can control. That control comes via correct training in context to an attack. If you are no longer where the adversary is attacking, you have changed the timing, in essence, you have stolen the timing from him. And if you do that, and hit him well, the fight is won. But only patient students will learn this.

Apex Announces Precision Made Performance Hammers for the 1911

Apex Tactical Specialties is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of its precision made performance hammers for the 1911.

Designed by Apex Founder and Master Gunsmith Randy Lee, the new 1911 hammers are based on the key hook geometry of a 50-year-old National Match Government model 1911 and features a hook height that is .018” to .020” to provide a consistent, clean breaking trigger pull. Manufactured from heat-treated A-2 tool steel, the hammers are precisely cut on a wire EDM for dimensional consistency and perfectly square hammer hooks. The result is a hook profile that requires no stoning or polishing for performance.

Apex is offering two versions of the hammer. The Classic Spur-style (part# 106-110) and the Commander-style (part# 106-111). When paired with a premium sear, the trigger pull will be in the 3.5 to 4.0 lbs range but easily tuned to a lower weight for competition use.

Ruger Custom Shop 10/22 Competition

The 10/22 Competition Rifle features a hard-coat anodized, CNC-machined, heat treated and stress relieved 6061-T6511 aluminum receiver with an integral, optics-ready, 30 MOA picatinny rail. The custom receiver is paired with a 4140, heat treated and nitrided, match CNC-machined bolt to create a tight-fitting, smooth action that will enable the highest level of performance. The receiver incorporates a second bedding lug, ensuring it is securely bedded to the stock. This rifle also features an exclusive second barrel locator to provide a free-floating barrel for superior accuracy. The receiver incorporates a rear cleaning port, providing access to the barrel from the rear of the receiver for ease of cleaning.

The 16-?” bull barrel is fluted to reduce weight and dissipate heat and also is threaded with a ½”-28 pattern to accommodate the included muzzle brake or other barrel accessories. The barrel also features a proprietary, enhanced semi-auto chamber which has proven to increase accuracy and precision while not compromising reliable feeding and extraction.

The receiver is secured in a painted and textured laminated stock that provides a sure-feeling, slip-free grip. The stock also features a fully adjustable cheek rest, which can be repositioned horizontally and vertically to allow the customer to create a custom-adjusted feel that is stable, comfortable and repeatable.

Savage Introduces MSR 15 Competition

Savage built the speed, accuracy and customization competitive shooters need to win into every aspect of its new MSR 15 Competition. Shipments of these firearms have been delivered to dealers.

The MSR 15 Competition is fitted with an advanced, 18-inch carbon fiber wrapped stainless barrel built specifically for the rifle in a collaborative effort between Savage and PROOF Research. Its unique ported muzzle brake allows the shooter to tune recoil impulse to stabilize the muzzle for faster, more accurate follow-up shots.

The custom-length gas block can be adjusted for optimal cycling of the full range of bullet weights, as well as for use with a suppressor. The gas block has also been upgraded with an integral Picatinny rail and a custom handguard.
