NSSF Commends U.S. Sen. Cornyn for Fix NICS Legislation

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®), the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industries, praised U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) for his leadership on introducing the bipartisan S. 2135, the Fix NICS Act. The legislation drew support from both Republican and Democrat co-sponsors.

“We commend Sen. Cornyn for his leadership to encourage state and federal agencies to enter all applicable records in the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS),” said Lawrence G. Keane, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for the National Shooting Sports Foundation. “This legislation will provide states with the necessary resources to promptly and efficiently provide disqualifying records to NICS on those who are prohibited under current law from possessing firearms. Federally licensed firearms retailers rely upon NICS to prevent the sale of firearms to prohibited persons. This legislation will fix NICS so that background checks are accurate and reliable.”

Sen. Cornyn’s legislation would ensure federal and state authorities comply with existing law and accurately report relevant criminal history and mental health records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The bill penalizes federal agencies who fail to properly report relevant records and incentivizes states to improve their overall reporting. The bill also directs more federal funding to the accurate reporting of domestic violence records.

Fixing NICS has long been a top priority for NSSF. The Fix NICS campaign was launched by the firearms industry in 2013 when the industry examined how many states were failing to fully submit prohibiting mental health and other disqualifying records to NICS. Since then, NSSF’s work has resulted in reforms being adopted in 16 states and a 170 percent increase in records submission, to 4.5 million in 2013 up from only from 1.7 million in 2013. Several states, and as tragically learned through recent events, some federal agencies, still are not fully participated in submitting records to keep firearms from those prohibited from purchasing them.

“For years agencies and states haven’t complied with the law, failing to upload these critical records without consequence,” Sen. Cornyn said. “Just one record that’s not properly reported can lead to tragedy, as the country saw last week in Sutherland Springs, Texas. This bill aims to help fix what’s become a nationwide, systemic problem so we can better prevent criminals and domestic abusers from obtaining firearms.”

CCRKBA: Failure of Gun Laws, Legal System Allowed Rancho Tehama Rampage

BELLEVUE, WA – The horrible truth emerging in the aftermath of the Rancho Tehama Reserve rampage is that California’s legal system and restrictive gun control laws failed miserably, allowing killer Kevin Neal to remain loose and commit mass mayhem, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

“After Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston’s acknowledgement that his department knew, or at least suspected, that Neal had firearms in violation of a court order and did not take proactive steps, it is clear that the legal system in Tehama County, if not the entire state, is a train wreck,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Johnston’s revelation that Neal had four guns illegally, and that he was able to manufacture two rifles at home prove that the state’s Draconian gun control laws are a joke to be laughed at by any criminal or crazy person who wants a gun.”

Johnston told reporters Wednesday that, “we’re seeing that the more restrictive that the laws come to people that purchase firearms, we’re going to see those criminal elements build their own. That’s what they do.”

“Sheriff Johnston’s astonishingly candid remark literally eviscerates California’s piecemeal gun prohibition strategy,” Gottlieb observed. “Here was a man who was out on bail, on multiple felony charges, and who was a walking violation of every major gun control law in the state.

“The explanation for not confronting Neal is simply outrageous,” he continued. “Johnston said Neal was ‘not law enforcement friendly.’ What a shock! Neal was facing felony prosecution, his neighbors had a restraining order and he had apparently been shooting guns that he wasn’t supposed to have, on his property. Of course he’s not going to be friendly, but that’s why we have search warrants and SWAT teams and jails.

“Two neighbors who reported him are dead,” Gottlieb noted. “Their restraining order was worthless. Gun laws that treat honest Californians like criminals failed to stop a real criminal.

“Our hats are off to the courageous deputies who stopped this madman,” he said. “But we are disgusted by the way the system failed. If this case proves anything, it’s that people who think gun control laws keep guns out of the wrong hands are sadly mistaken, and five new gravestones make that point clear.”

Springfield Armory SAINT EDGE
Out-Front AR-15: New SAINT™ Edge from Springfield Armory®

Latest model packs proprietary performance into a battle-smart platform

GENESEO, ILL. – Springfield Armory’s SAINT series is capturing the attention of AR-15 enthusiasts – and the SAINT line is growing in lock step to meet demand.

The latest, just-released SAINT Edge carries an armload of proprietary features that make it the most advanced SAINT yet: lightweight, with a slick billet machined lower receiver with Accu-tite™ tension system, patent-pending full-length free float handguard, modular trigger system, unique mid-sized charging handle – even the new SA-Lite™ muzzle brake is a special Springfield Armory design.

The new SAINT Edge builds on the popular 5.56 NATO (.223 REM) AR-15 design Springfield Armory introduced in November, 2016 and has been expanding ever since.

The lower receiver is machined, rather than forged, from aircraft grade 7075 T6 billet aluminum. It is equipped with Springfield Armory’s proprietary adjustable Accu-Tite™ tension system, designed to eliminate receiver play, and features two QD mounting points. The flat-top, optics-ready upper receiver is Type lll hard-coat anodized 7075 T6 aluminum, with forward assist and M4 feed ramps. The MPT enhanced M16 bolt carrier group is finished with super-hard Melonite® and carries a premium 9310 steel bolt, superior to Mil-Spec. The charging handle is Springfield Armory’s exclusive mid-size design for effortless operation.

The patent-pending, free-float aluminum handguard is unique to the SAINT, with a slim, full-length profile you can really get your hand around. M-Lok compatible locking tabs give you an almost unlimited choice of accessories, with multiple QD swivel mounting points for a sling or other equipment. Under the handguard, a mid-length, multi/mode adjustable gas block, pinned in place, provides the flawless operation high-volume shooters demand.

The new trigger system is an exclusive modular match, short-reset single stage design, with the precise feel of a competition rifle. The Melonite™ finished trigger components are super smooth and responds as rapidly as your finger can move.

With the rifle weighing in at just over six pounds, the light-weight profile has a 16″ CMV barrel that is Melonite® finished inside and out, with an optimum 1:8 twist. The newly designed SA-Lite™ muzzle brake is ultra lightweight. Extra large ports and increased surface area of the baffle plates create a highly efficient compensator for reduced recoil and super-steady, repeatable on-target rounds.

The new SAINT Edge also includes a ½ MOA windage adjustable dual aperture rear sight, and ½ MOA elevation-adjustable front sight that can be folded down, or used to co-witness with optics.

Upgraded furniture includes a textured Bravo Company Mod 3 pistol grip, six-position Bravo Mod 0 SopMod butt stock, and Mil-Spec hard-coat anodized aluminum receiver extension — all combat-focused and vault-solid to guarantee no clatter, no wobble, no distracting movement from muzzle to butt.

“The SAINT Edge is a tight, light, fast-handling machine that operators can count on — the most advanced AR-15 we’ve ever built”, says Springfield Armory’s Dennis Reese. “It’s a high quality, performance-based rifle with premium options built in — you don’t have to swap out features to upgrade it. We believe that, shot for shot, dollar for dollar, it’s the best you can get.”

Considering the dramatic success of the SAINT series, AR-15 enthusiasts everywhere – as well as dealers — are likely to agree.

Potential Military Coup in Zimbabwe
An ongoing standoff between President Robert Mugabe and the Zimbabwean military has intensified over the last two days, resulting in what appears to be a military takeover of the country’s government. After the military blocked roads outside of the country’s capital, Harare, soldiers took over the state broadcaster’s headquarters, and local media have reported gunfire and explosions. South African president Jacob Zuma confirmed that Mugabe and his family are safe, but that they are confined to their home amid what many expect will lead to an official transfer of power.
The U.S. Embassy in Harare informed American citizens on 14 November that the embassy would be closed on 15 November, and embassy staff have been urged to shelter in their homes. The United Kingdom has also issued a security update urging travelers to exercise caution.

BREAKING NEWS ON ZIMBABWE AND ZAMBIA ELEPHANT IMPORTATION
Our partners in Washington, D.C., have been working hard with the new administration and officials in the Dept. of Interior to make this happen. Hats off to all who are fighting for hunters in DC and around the world.

From John Jackson of Conservation Force:

Success: Today the FWS announced that it has made a positive enhancement finding for import of elephant hunting trophies from both Zimbabwe and Zambia for 2016, 2017 and 2018. The announcement was made by FWS Deputy Director Craig Sheehan and Tim Van Norman. The decision on Zimbabwe elephant before 2016 awaits legal resolution. The permits for Zimbabwe requires a Federal Register Notice which will be published within a week or ten days, then those permits can be issued. The Zambia permits are already being issued.

DSC will be providing more detailed information as it becomes available from the US Fish & Wildlife Service.
